CLIMATE CHOICES - SPEAKER SERIES

In this Climate Choices series of talks you will hear from people who know what they are talking about: scientists, engineers, farmers & food producers, policy advisers, health, water, fire and weather experts. If you are interested in your & the environment's future and that of the generations to come there will be something to learn and act on in a space where you can freely & safely ask questions.

Continuing the community conversation that began in July about climate science, weather, this next event will focus more on future planning with two experienced guest speakers.

The talks will be followed by a Q&A panel discussion and then afternoon tea with the opportunity for further discussion and connection.

SPEAKERS:

Richard Weller is a retired structural engineer and long-time member of the Australian Standards Committee: General Design Requirements and Loading on Structures, he has professional expertise in the setting of design criteria for buildings and structures for the impact of environmental actions such as wind, storm, temperature, flood, hail, snow and earthquake as well as the durability of structures and their life expectancy. He also has expertise in the design of coastal structures for wave, current and erosion attack and storm attack.

Richard will talk about the impact of extreme environmental events on our lives.

Jenny Edwardsis the lead scientist and director atLight House Architecture & Science, where she helps make residential design and retrofits more energy-efficient, comfortable, and affordable. A former molecular biologist, she retrained in science communication and earned qualifications as an ACT-licensed Building Energy Efficiency Assessor, bringing a building-science approach to diagnostics using air-leakage testing and thermal imaging. Over the years, she’s been recognised for her advocacy and education in residential energy efficiency and continues to drive industry and community change through her work and public speaking.

Jenny will talk about residential energy efficiency and the “building envelope” (insulation, airtightness, and thermal performance), plus practical ways homeowners can reduce energy use and improve comfort. She is also interested in topics like healthy housing, climate resilience in homes, and how builders and codes can better support high-performance outcomes.
