Still in limited release five decades after its premiere, it has become the longest-running theatrical release in film history. It gained notoriety as a midnight movie in 1977 when audiences began participating with the film in theatres.

The film has a large international cult following and follows the story of a newly engaged couple who have a breakdown in an isolated area and must pay a call to the bizarre residence of Dr. Frank-N-Furter.
